News of Note

My name is Kirsten Meyer and I am the secretary for the Syracuse Alumnae Chapter. I teach instrumental music at Stockbridge Valley Central School in Munnsville, NY. Stockbridge is a small, rural school with approximately 500 students in grades K-12. I am pleased to announce that Stockbridge is a recipient of Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Music Education Outreach Grant. The students and I are so excited to have this opportunity. Through SAI’s generosity, we will be able to purchase new instruments for our marching band. These funds will give us the opportunity to grow our music program and for the kids to look and sound even better. I would like to thank SAI Philanthropies for their continued support of music education and especially for supporting Stockbridge Valley. I’m looking forward to a great year!

Successful Service Projects

March 27, 2011

The sisters have undertaken two service projects this year. Both of them were fun and meaningful; we’ve enjoyed these opportunities to work together on projects that make our community and world a better place.

In early October, three sisters (and Dakota, the black lab) walked in the American Cancer Society’s “Walk for the Cure” breast cancer benefit. Although it’s not a musically-oriented cause, we are a womens’ fraternity, so the issue of breast cancer is relevant to all of us. Our small team raised a little over $300 for breast cancer research, and sported pink SAI t-shirts for the event.

Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk L1030284

In March, we helped the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra with one of the youth series performances. The sisters manned the “make your own musical instrument” table for the morning performance. We helped set up and made example instruments. We had the ingredients for three kinds of DIY instrument crafts: horns made from wax paper and cardboard tubes; tabourines made from paper plates with jingle bells and beads; and egg shakers made from Easter eggs, rice, and superglue. Once the doors opened, we assisted the kids with making egg shakers, tambourines, and kazoo horns. Things were pretty orderly at the start of the morning…

…but by the time the orchestra started playing, we had quite a mess to clean up! It didn’t take long to clear away the evidence of kids having had fun in the concert hall lobby, and even the clean-up was fun.
